About Washington Square

One of William Penn's original public squares, later used as a burial ground for thousands of people including soldiers and victims of disease. Its layered history has made a frequent setting for ghost stories and reports of apparitions.

Viewing the tomb of the unknown soldier was very solemn. I have family members who have served, and I can't begin to imagine their sacrifice. Very nice park, well worth the visit.

Nice park overall with great landscape and beautiful statue of Washington and fountain, but there are homeless people throughout like this that just completely ruined the experience. It is pitiful that a large city with such a large police department would allow such sacred grounds to be disgrace like this by people that can so easily be moved along

Nice park near the historic sites but sometimes questionable people just like the entire area of Philadelphia. Fine during the day when there's plenty of people around.

Washington Square is a park with multiple memorials, signs, and trees. With plenty of benches and green space, this was a nice spot to rest or have a snack while learning about history. The earliest iteration of the park opened in 1815 as Southeast Square but received its current name in 1825. The highlight of the park was the metal George Washington statue and a stone wall behind it carved with a reminder that the park is a massive burial ground for unknown soldiers from the American Revolutionary War.

This park is a nice place to rest. Park benches and grassy areas provide good seating for visitors. A lot of the area is shaded by large leafy trees. This is a good place to read and relax.
