The story

About Villisca Axe Murder House

The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa, is the site of one of the state’s most infamous unsolved crimes. During the night of June 9, 1912, eight people were murdered inside the small home: Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children, and two young guests from the Stillinger family. Despite an extensive investigation, multiple suspects, and enormous public attention, no one was ever convicted, leaving the murders an enduring mystery more than a century later. The preserved house has since become known for reports of unexplained paranormal activity. Visitors and investigators have described disembodied voices, footsteps, moving objects, shadow figures, cold spots, and other unusual experiences throughout the rooms where the murders occurred. Reports involving children’s voices and unexplained sounds are especially common in stories surrounding the property. Today, the Villisca Axe Murder House operates as a historic destination offering daytime tours and overnight stays, allowing visitors to explore the remarkably preserved crime scene and investigate its reported paranormal activity after dark.

My MIL found and was the one to book the tour for our family. Its a tranquil drive out to the home in a still small town. The tour guide (Nico- sorry for the probably wrong spelling!) Was amazing. They trooper the heat for us and we're very interactive with the group as a whole. We then got to wander around the home for a bit on our own. We had an EMF meter that went off a couple of times as well. Overall, a very tragic story of the family and kids. But very educational and cool to be able to step back in time.

The guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the town and the house. We enjoyed the tour along with seeing the house as it was in that era. Would recommend going if you’re thinking about it. The only downside was how small the actual town is. There is only one restaurant and one coffee shop both of them were closed one the day I went.

Very interesting explanation of backstory and questions answered with deep knowledge of the history of that time. Highly suggest for true crime enthusiasts! We enjoyed very much, definitely not a wasted trip and tenderloin at town diner was exceptional!!

Crime junkie review* I was honestly disappointed with our visit this time. I had been to the Villisca Axe Murder House a few years ago and was able to go into the basement, which was an important part of the experience. I recently returned with my two daughters because I wanted them to experience the house as well, but we were told the basement was “being remodeled” and that we couldn’t go down there. What made it even more confusing was that I looked into the basement and didn’t see any remodeling taking place. I was also told it was “just a crawlspace,” but that didn’t match my previous visit. When I went down there before, I could stand up comfortably—it was not just a crawlspace. That explanation didn’t make sense based on what I had personally experienced. The tour also felt very rushed. The guide repeatedly reminded us that another group was arriving about 30 minutes after ours, so it felt like we had to hurry through the experience instead of taking our time to look around and ask questions. It took away from what should have been an immersive visit. It also felt like parts of the tour were left out compared to my previous visit, making the experience feel incomplete. Another thing that bothered me was how much the tour encouraged visitors to eat at the local restaurant. We had eaten there on our previous trip and didn’t think the food was very good. I understand it’s the only restaurant in town and it’s great to support local businesses, but it was promoted as though it was a must-visit, and that wasn’t our experience. I was really looking forward to sharing this experience with my daughters because I remembered enjoying it much more the first time. Unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to those memories. I hope future visitors receive clear and honest information about what areas are accessible and that guests are given enough time to fully experience such a historic location.

We booked the 45 minute tour which was educational, tragic, and historical. The tour guide allowed us to independently roam after the tour for a bit. We did not stay the night however overnight guests may NOT use the beds to sleep on. A cot or sleeping bag is needed. The Giftshop is small, commercialized, and nice.
