About The Whitney

The Whitney in Detroit, Michigan, is a grand Gilded Age mansion known for its elaborate architecture, fine dining, and longstanding paranormal reputation. Completed in 1894 for lumber baron David Whitney Jr. and his family, the massive Romanesque Revival home was one of Detroit’s most impressive private residences. Its richly decorated rooms, stained glass, carved woodwork, and numerous fireplaces remain preserved today as part of an upscale restaurant and event venue. Over the years, employees and visitors have reported unusual activity throughout the mansion, including unexplained footsteps, doors moving on their own, sudden cold spots, and apparitions believed by some to be connected to former residents. The elevator and upper floors are frequently mentioned in stories surrounding the building, while the third-floor Ghostbar openly embraces the mansion’s supernatural reputation. Although many accounts remain part of local folklore, they have become another layer of history surrounding the property. Today, guests can dine, attend events, and explore one of Detroit’s most remarkable historic mansions while experiencing a location famous for both its elegance and its ghost stories.

A night to remember!! We went to celebrate my first cousin's graduation from medical school – and this place is as high caliber as the degree itself. We sat in a private room, and our host was incredibly knowledgeable and super friendly. He answered all of our questions and recommended the best plates. The food was phenomenal, from appetizer to dinner – the meat was cooked exactly the way everyone wanted. To end the night, we took a tour of the building after his short but fascinating summary of the place. I will definitely be going back. Highly recommend for any special occasion!

We had our wedding reception here in June & could not recommend more. Samantha was truly a dream to work with and helped make sure all the special details were accommodated. We were engaged in New Orleans and bananas foster holds a special place in our heart. They made accommodations that we could have this dessert. The pastry chef was so kind and full of light! We are still getting compliments on the food. Samantha was always so responsive and never annoyed with my many questions I had. We love that we’ll have a place to come back every year for our anniversary.

The Whitney holds a very special place in my heart, filled with personal memories that make every visit truly meaningful. The ambiance is absolutely breathtaking, elegant, warm and timeless, making it the perfect setting for unforgettable moments. The food is consistently outstanding, beautifully prepared and full of flavour, and the service is nothing short of exceptional. I’ve done private bookings here, and each time the experience has been flawless, seamless, and incredibly well looked after. The attention to detail and genuine care from the team always stand out. A truly special restaurant that never disappoints and continues to deliver excellence every single time.

We had a delightful afternoon tea here recently. The mansion is an amazing place in its own right, with its tapestries, stained glass windows and carved wood architecture, and an ENORMOUS STAIRCASE leading upstairs (there's a small antique elevator too, where, if you take it, you'll never feel alone😉. There are numerous private dining rooms in the 3-story house-turned-restaurant, where you can dine like royalty on the establishment's various items, none of which are not 'just plain old food' by any means. Ive experienced afternoon tea at many fine places, but truthfully, The Whitney has some of the best recipes that I've ever tasted. Thank You, Whitney, for a job well done!
