The story

About The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary is a retired ocean liner permanently docked in Long Beach, California, and one of the most famous reportedly haunted ships in the United States. Launched in 1934, the massive vessel carried passengers across the Atlantic before serving as a troop transport during World War II. After returning to civilian service, the Queen Mary continued sailing until 1967, when it was permanently moored and converted into a hotel, museum, and attraction. Its long history has produced decades of ghost stories and paranormal reports. Visitors and staff have described unexplained footsteps, voices, shadowy figures, sudden cold spots, and apparitions in areas throughout the ship. Some of the most frequently mentioned locations include the engine room, former swimming pool, corridors, and cabins associated with past passengers and crew members. The Queen Mary now embraces that reputation with paranormal tours and special experiences that explore both the ship’s documented history and the stories surrounding its alleged hauntings, making it one of Southern California’s best-known destinations for history and ghost lore.

The Queen Mary is an excellent spot for photography and sightseeing, even if you’re not staying overnight. The ship’s historic architecture, vintage details, and dramatic waterfront setting make it a visually striking place to explore. Walking through the public corridors and decks feels like stepping back in time, with preserved woodwork, portholes, and maritime décor that create a nostalgic atmosphere. The ship is quiet and peaceful during most hours, which makes taking photos easy and enjoyable. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, often sharing interesting historical notes that add depth to the visit. The views from the decks are beautiful, especially during sunset when the harbor lights begin to reflect off the water. Nearby attractions like Shoreline Village and the Aquarium of the Pacific make the area even more appealing for a casual day trip. Walkability is strong both on the ship and around the waterfront, allowing visitors to explore without needing transportation. Safety feels steady, with well‑maintained public areas and secure access points throughout the ship. Even without dining, the restaurants and cafés add charm to the environment and offer additional photo opportunities. The ship’s age is noticeable, but that vintage character is part of what makes the Queen Mary unique. Overall, the Queen Mary is a great choice for travelers who want scenic views, historic ambiance, and a relaxed place to take photos. It delivers a memorable experience without requiring an overnight stay, making it ideal for quick visits, date nights, or casual sightseeing. The ship’s charm, quiet atmosphere, and beautiful surroundings make it a standout Long Beach landmark worth visiting.

Always an incredible stay! We came down from Washington for a family vacation and made reservations for the mini suite and graveyard ghost tour on July 18th-19th. 10/10 experience. The ghost tour wasn’t quite as in depth as pre covid days, but still so much fun to hear about the history of the ship and the spirits that reside there! David and Chris led an amazing tour and made sure our time was a great one. David is so knowledgeable of the ship’s history and I learned so much from him that I didn’t learn before. Chris was very funny and kept things less scary :) A great pair. Dinner at the Chelsea was lovely and our room was quaint and quiet. The only somewhat downside is the lack of AC in each room, but that is to be expected of course. When I called the front desk for fans, they brought them immediately and they were very helpful. Thank you to the staff who always makes it such a fun stay. We will be back!

The Queen Mary has a personality all its own. I was there photographing a bridal session, and it couldn't have been a better backdrop. Everywhere I turned there was another amazing location, from polished wood walls and vintage staircases to long hallways with just the right amount of character. The mix of Art Deco elegance and the ship's rich history gave every photo a timeless feel. I also enjoyed walking the decks and looking out over the harbor. It's easy to imagine what it must have been like when this grand ocean liner was crossing the Atlantic with thousands of passengers on board. The ship definitely shows its age in places, but for me that's part of the charm. It feels authentic instead of overly restored, and every creak and weathered detail seems to tell another story. Whether you're into history, architecture, photography, or just exploring somewhere different, there's plenty to appreciate here. Just don't be surprised if you find yourself wandering a little longer than you planned...this ship has a funny way of convincing you there's one more hallway or staircase worth checking out.

It's a wonderful place to visit. Some much history with a lot of craftsmanship. The docents are extremely knowledgeable. Some tour areas are not ADA accessible. We did not stay onboard, but had drinks and dinner. The bar area was very nice and the server was friendly. The dining room was also nice and service was good. The food was okay, but not great. It is more of an experience than food.

It's a great experience. I wouldn't recommend staying more than 2 or 3 night max though. There is no climate control in the rooms. So no AC/heat. We only had ONE plugin that worked. So we had to rotate charging electronics on one plug. Keep your window open at all times to keep air circulation in your room. The restaurants are for rich people with $300 wine bottles that you can get cheaper at the grocery store. There is no housekeeping that we seen. So you have to ask for more towels at the desk. Its very vintage and they try to keep the old feel. So keep that in mind
