The story

About St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum

St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum in St. Augustine, Florida, preserves more than a century of maritime history along Florida’s Atlantic coast. The current lighthouse was completed in 1874, replacing an earlier Spanish watchtower and lighthouse threatened by coastal erosion. Generations of lighthouse keepers and their families lived and worked on the property, which today includes the 165-foot tower, historic keeper’s house, maritime exhibits, and archaeological collections. The lighthouse is also famous for its paranormal reputation. Visitors, staff, and investigators have reported apparitions, shadowy figures, disembodied voices, footsteps, cold spots, and other unexplained activity around the tower and keeper’s house. One frequently told story involves the daughters of lighthouse construction superintendent Hezekiah Pittee, who died in a tragic accident on the property in 1873. Reports of children’s voices and figures have since become part of the site’s ghost lore. Today, the museum offers daytime exploration along with after-dark ghost experiences and paranormal investigations.

This place is AWESOME. It is so much cooler than I expected! Walking up to the top of the lighthouse was incredibly fun, with amazing views, but their museum and play area was SO well put together and fun to explore, too! We had ages 1-65 in our group and literally everyone loved being there; there's definitely something for everyone! The little walking trails were really beautiful, as well. Highly recommend!

Fun side stop, great was to get some steps in and see St. Augustine from a bird's eye view. Really enjoyed the facts on the way up. You can get away with wearing comfortable flip flops, places to stop and rest on the way up or down. Enjoyed the drive around St. Augustine to get here too! Great historical coastal town.

This was a wonderful experience! It’s very affordable and a must-do if you find yourself in St. Augustine. I made the climb to the top, and the view was absolutely amazing. The museum was just as interesting as the lighthouse itself. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in the area! Also, the pickles are a must-try don’t pass them up!

Great time. Family loved the views and history surrounding the lighthouse and keepers. It's still a functioning lighthouse too, which is cool. Plus they are keeping boat building alive by having demos and hand made boats to check out, which fits perfectly with the maritime theme. Lighthouse is 165 feet tall and 219 steps to get to top/observation deck, so be aware, in case stairs aren't your friend. ;) Definitely worth a visit and check out the gift shop for some cool mementos.

Wow what a fun thing to do. The people are super helpful and friendly! If you make it to the top and out on the platform listen to the tour guide they were great! After you make that climb and back down make sure you get the $1 certificate at the gift shop and fill it out! Also visit the museum. They have alot of wonderful finds. The grounds themselves are absolutely beautiful!
