The story

About Sloss Furnaces

Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham, Alabama, is a preserved industrial complex that once played a major role in the city’s iron-producing industry. The furnaces began operating in 1882 and continued producing pig iron for nearly a century before closing in 1971. Rather than being demolished, the enormous network of furnaces, pipes, tunnels, and industrial structures was preserved and eventually became a National Historic Landmark and museum dedicated to Birmingham’s industrial history. The difficult and often dangerous working conditions associated with early iron production have also contributed to decades of paranormal stories surrounding the property. Visitors and investigators have reported shadowy figures, unexplained voices, footsteps, strange lights, and unusual sounds throughout the industrial complex. Some legends connect the activity to workers who were injured or killed during the furnaces’ operating years, although many specific stories have become difficult to separate from local folklore. Today, visitors can explore Sloss Furnaces as a historic site while experiencing one of Birmingham’s most distinctive and atmospheric landmarks.

Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark was one of the most unique and unexpected experiences of my travels. Walking through this beautifully preserved industrial complex offered a fascinating glimpse into America's steel-making history while showcasing how historic spaces can be reimagined for today's artists and community. One of the biggest surprises was the incredible outdoor sculpture garden, featuring contemporary works that blend beautifully with the massive blast furnaces and industrial architecture. As an artist and photographer, I found the combination of history, art, and texture absolutely mesmerizing. I also encourage visitors to support the Sloss Metal Arts Program with a donation. It's inspiring to see this historic landmark continue to serve the community by providing educational opportunities and creative space for artists. If you're visiting Birmingham, don't miss this extraordinary landmark. It's where history, art, and industry come together in a truly unforgettable way. #TravelWithRolando #AdventuresWithBella #SlossFurnaces #BirminghamAL #IndustrialHistory #PublicArt #MetalArts #TravelPhotography

So cool and such a beautiful way to utilize a deactivated industrial space. A true hidden gem of Birmingham and it's free! Great way to spend a few minutes with easy to navigate walkways and it supports local metal artisans too!

Visited on a family road trip. One thing to say about this place is it's a cool place about iron working history. The staff was friendly and its free to do a self guided tour. They have a gift shop, video museum that tells you about the history of Sloss, and of course the Sloss itself. Even if you don't like industrial history its a cool place to visit. Only spent 1 hour here and it felt like enough time walk around and see things, as my family and I got here late. Need to come back for a night tour one day.

We went to Sloss on a field trip with our fourth grader. We enjoyed the sight and learning more about our hometown. The true guide was a bit distracted and lack more then the basic knowledge that we already had. It was a great experience, I only wish that he could've had a bit more focus to teach as well as to engage the students. Overall, it was a good experience.

Sloss is a peek into the past and something very unique to Birmingham. Me and my eife spent around 90 minutes exploring the site and another hour riding the adjacent trails (electric scooter) that Birmingham has put into place.
