This house is one of four under the care of the Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks. The house was not open during the time of my visit, but I did see Powel House from the street and read its battered informational sign. Wealthy young couple Samuel and Elizabeth Willing Powel (also spelled Powell) bought the house just before their marriage in 1765. Samuel would twice serve as the mayor of Philadelphia before dying in the Yellow Fever Epidemic in 1793 at age fifty-five.

We had the pleasure of sampling delicious desserts here during a Philadelphia Historic Landmarks event entitled " A Sinful Feast Again". The event celebrated John Adams' description of a multi-course lavish dinner orchestrated by Elizabeth Willing Powel. This famous, beautifully preserved mansion in Society Hill was built in 1765. It was home to Elizabeth and Mayor Samuel Powel, who hobnobbed with our nation's founders. It is perfect for an intimate wedding or party. Most of the rooms are open and restored, plus a knowledgeable guide was provided to offer tours.

No online reservation. We just walk in for tour. Third floor is it open and the tour is fairly short. Good to see some documents and furnitures recollected.

We held our wedding reception at the Powel House last August. The dinner took place in the garden and the setting was absolutely gorgeous. Many of our Philly-based guests didn't know about the house and were excited to learn about it's historical significance. Renting the space itself is inexpensive but there is a hidden cost in that you have to rent the tables and a tent, and you must use their approved caterers. That said, we felt it was worth it. Thanks so much to Meagan and the rest of the staff for making it such a smooth event.
