The tunnel was built in 1856 to transport coal and iron ore in support of the local iron industry. There are many reports of paranormal activity here but we did not since anything. The Moonville ghost town is nearby. The tunnel is a close walk from the parking lot. The walk is level and easy. This is a relic from 1800's and in surprisingly good shape for its age. There is maintained by the Moonville Rail Trail Association and can be used by hikers, bikers, and horses. The most impressive thing about the tunnel is the graffiti art throughout the tunnel. Though there are signs posted not to do it, many have ignored that and have painted some interesting artwork. It reminded me of the graffiti you often see on trains.

Absolutely terrifying! Please stay safe when heading to haunted locations, Me, my fiancé have a YouTube channel called Ben and Chey, we brought our friends with us to the tunnel to try to see if we catch anything and just to spend time together, We walked through the trail, found 2 dead mouses, walked a bit down the trail felt extremely like we were being followed and watched, found a snake and holded it, Then went back to the tunnel to investigate, asked questions and caught some things, afterwards went to the graveyard, used a Necrophonic and our names were being called, felt watched, heard footsteps and rusting in the woods around us, We went during the day, left urgently around 6pm 2 hours before nightfall, the evp caught the word demon being said 2-3x , someone’s said “ hes here”, the evp knew info no one’s knows, Also I am almost 6 months pregnant the thing once I turned on the evp for our video immediately said our friends name and my unborn child’s name too, no way it could have known that, Later our friend was acting weird looking into the forest not like herself, I saw something I cannot explain, then soon after she bolted off in the direction she was looking, she said she saw her dead grandmother and we needed to go, I don’t fully know if it was her grandma or not but that’s not even haft of the story, she was acting weird the whole time leaving the place- we left urgently, something was wrong and we got to the gas station she doesn’t remember that, Turns out a demon tried to attached itself to her, scratching her multiple times, and literally having her not act herself, her voice changed and said “ no” in a deep tone to not get saged, her look in her eye truly scared me it was not her We got to almost WV and she snapped out of it, fully back to herself, and didn’t remember anything. Once again we have a video being posted here soon as we just went yesterday, please check out @Ben and Chey on YouTube for some of the video footage, we didn’t catch the bad bad parts due to having to leave urgently after it started getting bad we ended the video, Please stay safe there is something maybe a demon or something else there, it tired to attach to our friend, we sages shortly after and prayed over everyone, It may not seem haunted but something is there please stay aware and protected, it almost went horribly wrong if we didn’t get out, so glad we didn’t go at night due to the experience.

Moonville Rail Trail is operated by the Vinton County Park District. The graffiti is impressive but kinda sad to see. There’s about 10 miles of flat trails to hike. The Moonville Tunnel is on the United States National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places. So, it’s definitely worth checking out. It’s known to be haunted and a paranormal hotspot. I’ve been hiking here several times and never had any experience but love reading about others that have!

This place was really awesome! I've wanted to check it out for a while now. So hubby and I thought we'd get our weekly hike in around here and see the tunnel. It's kinda sad that it's got so much graffiti all over but the art is really cool. I've heard it's hunted. I have no idea about that but it was a neat old part of history to check out and enjoy. We went January 11th 2026. Just an FYI there's a detour are getting to the tunnel if you park by the school house. They're rebuilding a bridge.
