Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, is an absolutely spectacular, deeply moving, and pristine historic destination that offers an unparalleled look into the life of Abraham Lincoln before his presidency. The entire four-block historic neighborhood is exceptionally nice, beautifully preserved with original period boardwalks and gas lamps, and kept remarkably clean, allowing you to step completely back in time to the year 1860. The crown jewel of the property is the beautifully restored 12-room Greek Revival house—the only home Lincoln ever owned—where the rooms flow flawlessly from the formal front parlor where he accepted the presidential nomination to the intimate family bedrooms upstairs, leaving you completely in awe of the sheer history preserved within its walls. What truly elevates the historic site into a premier, top-tier destination is the phenomenal team of National Park Service rangers who lead the guided house tours. The park rangers are absolutely amazing, incredibly welcoming, and exceptionally patient as they walk you through the home. They demonstrate a staggering, world-class depth of historical knowledge, effortlessly answering every single question from the crowd with a warm enthusiasm that brings the Lincoln family's daily life to life. Whether explaining the stories behind the intricate floral wallpapers or detailing Lincoln’s interactions with his Springfield neighbors, the rangers handle curious minds with total grace, turning a simple historical walk into a beautiful, unforgettable celebration of American history.

Walking into the Lincoln Home neighborhood felt like stepping into a different era. The quiet streets, lined with beautifully preserved homes, instantly transported us back to the 1800s — it’s hard to believe this sits right in the heart of Springfield. As we toured Lincoln’s home, each room told a story — simple, lived-in, yet filled with history. Hearing about his life before becoming president made the experience feel personal and real, not just something from a textbook. What stood out most was how immersive everything felt. It wasn’t just a quick stop; it was a chance to slow down, walk the same paths, and imagine life during that time. The park rangers added so much value with their insights and storytelling. Things to know before you visit: The guided house tour is free, but it requires a reservation. Reservations are given on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s best to start at the Visitor Center. Depending on your tour slot, you can explore the surrounding neighborhood or plan a visit to the nearby Illinois State Capitol while you wait. Whether you’re visiting with family or just exploring on your own, this place leaves you with a deeper appreciation of history. A truly memorable and meaningful experience in Springfield.

The Lincoln Home is a must go, it is so amazing and shows Abraham Lincoln in a perspective I've never considered before. They had a video playing about him that was very interesting. They showed what he accomplished and the timeline of it all that was different than what I thought. They also had an amazing tour! Our tour guide was great and told his story amazingly. She showed him not only as an important political figure but also a loving father and husband. And thanks to his son Robert Linvoln who sold their property under one condition, that it is used to honor his father and that no one should ever have to pay to get in. Because of his father's belief that everyone should have an equal chance there is no cost to get in and even no cost for a tour. This is truly an amazing place and I highly recommend coming.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Lincoln’s Home in Springfield, Illinois, is a super cool historic site and definitely worth stopping to check out. There’s so much history here, and being able to walk around the neighborhood and see the home makes the experience even better. I really enjoyed the visit and will definitely be back again. Next time, I’m bringing my son so he can earn his Ranger Badge from the site! That will make the next visit even more special. If you’re in Springfield, this is definitely a must-stop. Highly recommend checking it out!

You can walk through the actual house that Abraham Lincoln lived in. How cool is that! The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is located in downtown Springfield, Illinois, just a few blocks from the Illinois State Capitol. The site is operated by the National Park Service which preserves not only Abraham Lincoln's home but also much of the surrounding neighborhood. Your visit begins at the Visitor Center, where you obtain your free tour ticket and can browse several exhibits about Lincoln, his family, and the history of the neighborhood. The staff and park rangers were friendly, helpful, and well organized. When it was time for our tour, our group was briefed in the small theater and then escorted the several blocks through the historic neighborhood to Lincoln's home. The guide lead our group to outside the home first and talked about the history and then we went into the house and moved from room to room. The tour guide did a great job of explaining everything and answering the many questions that our group had about the house. Seeing the actual home where Lincoln lived before becoming President makes the history feel much more personal than simply reading about it in a book or hearing about it on the web. The rooms are furnished in period style, and the guides do an excellent job pointing out interesting details that you might otherwise overlook. Because this is a carefully preserved historic home, visitors are asked not to touch the furniture, walls, or other interior features. There are also several stairways, narrow hallways, and uneven transitions between rooms, so those with mobility limitations may find portions of the tour challenging. The National Park Service works hard to preserve the home while still allowing visitors to experience it as authentically as possible. I would suggest after touring the house that you take some time to walk through the surrounding neighborhood. Many of the neighboring homes have been restored, creating the feeling of stepping back into the mid-1800s. Overall, this was a highlight of our visit to Springfield. The knowledgeable guides, beautifully preserved home, and historic neighborhood made it a memorable experience. I would highly recommend the Lincoln Home National Historic Site to anyone visiting Springfield or anyone interested in American history. Enjoy!
