The story

A Richmond Halloween tradition

Explore the haunted history of Church Hill, one of Richmond’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods with Haunts of Richmond. Known as the birthplace of the American Revolution, Church Hill’s centuries-old streets are steeped in tales of war, secrecy, and spirits that may have never moved on. This guided walking ghost tour blends Richmond history with chilling folklore and reported paranormal encounters. Guests will hear the story of Elizabeth Van Lew, the infamous Civil War spymaster whose intelligence network shaped the outcome of the war and whose presence is still said to linger. The tour also explores the tragic romance between Edgar Allan Poe and Elmira Royster Shelton, a love story rooted in Church Hill and marked by loss. Additional accounts include reported hauntings tied to a former Civil War hospital and other historic locations where visitors and residents have experienced the unexplained. Equal parts history and ghost story, the Church Hill Chillers Ghost Tour offers a mysterious and atmospheric look at why this neighborhood is considered one of the most haunted areas of Richmond, Virginia.

Valerie was amazing! She brought so much energy to the tour and kept everyone engaged from start to finish. Her knowledge of Richmond's history and haunted locations was impressive, and she shared everything in a way that was both entertaining and informative. You can tell she's passionate about what she does. The tour was the highlight of my visit and I highly recommend taking a tour.

We did the haunted Monroe campus tour. I thought that it was a decent tour in the sense that it gave a lot of historical background. However, the tour was 10% about haunted occurrences, and about 90% random history and our tour guide's (Martha's) personal experience and history on campus. We've done ghost tours before and they had been really good. However, I felt that there should have been more effort put into the haunted part of the tour, since that is what is advertised, and not as much into the history and other things that don't necessarily all pertain directly to the haunts. Martha was very knowledgeable about many things around campus. However, we paid for a haunted tour, and not a history lesson. I think she would be great at doing a history guided tour, but there needs to be some work done to really qualify as part of the haunted tours at Richmond.

I recently went on the Haunted Capitol Tour with Jenny as our guide and had a wonderful time! She shared stories of ghosts, premonitions, and haunted objects as we walked around on a chilly and windy evening. She was super knowledgeable about Richmond history and very willing to expand on the events and people she shared with us. Would highly recommend this tour for those interested in Richmond history and the paranormal.

Marcia gave a terrific Haunted Capitol Hill tour! The ghost stories were spooky and the buildings and architecture were stunning. I'm not great believer in ghosts, but I enjoyed the stories, based on firsthand accounts, nonetheless. I learned some history and got a local's insight into Richmond, something I'd been missing from my museum visits and walks around town. Thanks Haunts of Richmond!
