If I had to choose one icon for Chicago, it would be the water tower. One of the few structures to survive the great fire of 1871, the water tower stands as a reminder of our past. Together with a pumping station across the street, it’s a marvelous example of limestone construction that I admire every time I walk past it: and I have walked past it thousands of times.

Standing right in the middle of the bustling Magnificent Mile, the Chicago Water Tower looks like a tiny, beautiful castle surrounded by massive modern skyscrapers. It is an absolute must-stop, especially if you appreciate history. Built in 1869 out of distinct yellowing limestone, it is most famous for being one of the absolute only public structures to survive the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The flames leveled blocks all around it, but this tower stood firm. Today, it serves as a powerful symbol of the city's resilience and determination to rebuild. It takes just a few minutes to walk up to and admire the gothic architecture, and there is a lovely, free little city art gallery tucked inside. Definitely stop by and take a photo with a true piece of living history!

I stopped by while walking Michigan Avenue and it was an easy, quick visit in the middle of the Magnificent Mile. The tower is a beautiful old limestone landmark, and knowing it survived the Great Chicago Fire makes it feel worth seeing. There was no wait or planning needed, just a good spot to pause, take a few photos, and sit nearby for a bit. It is not a long stop, but it is a simple one to fit in if you are already in the area.

Chicago Water Tower is a historic landmark located on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. Built in 1869, this limestone tower is one of the few surviving structures that survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. With its distinctive castle-like appearance, the Chicago Water Tower has become an iconic symbol of resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Designed by architect William W. Boyington, the Water Tower was originally constructed to house a 135-foot tall standpipe, which provided water pressure for the city's rapidly growing population. However, its purpose expanded beyond that of a mere water storage facility. After the fire ravaged the city, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, the Water Tower stood tall amidst the ruins, serving as a beacon of hope for the residents of Chicago. The tower's design is a blend of Gothic Revival and castellated architecture, featuring battlements, turrets, and ornate detailing. Its exterior is adorned with intricate carvings and decorative stone work, showcasing the craftsmanship of the era. The Water Tower's slender profile and elegant proportions make it a true architectural gem. Today, the Chicago Water Tower serves as a gallery space for the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower.

I thought this was a little church in the middle of the Magnificent Mile but it is a historical water tower. I did not do any research before seeing this beautiful building. The building is closed to the public. It is a nice spot to take a break if you are walking the mile. It is a respectful midway point. There are plenty of birds around to keep you entertained.
