The story

About Alton Cemetery

is a historic burial ground overlooking the Mississippi River and one of the locations most closely associated with the city’s paranormal reputation. The cemetery contains graves of prominent residents, Civil War-era figures and abolitionist newspaper publisher Elijah P. Lovejoy. Over the years, visitors and local historians have reported a variety of unexplained experiences, including apparitions, unusual lights, shadowy figures and the sensation of being watched. Stories are often connected to specific monuments and older sections of the cemetery, including the Haskell family area and Lovejoy’s memorial. ’s long history and concentration of ghost stories have made the cemetery a regular subject of local haunted-history tours. It remains an active and historic burial ground, so visitors should explore respectfully during public

Beautifully serene & landscaped historical location. The Elijah P Lovejoy memorial is not only majestic & pays great tribute to the man who was assassinated at the hands of pro-slavery mobs while defending his 4th printing press. You will also find the grave of Robert Wadlow who is recorded as being the tallest person in history. As you find your way through the exquisitely manicured grounds you will notice the final resting place for many military personnel & their families. This is an extremely peaceful and historical place to walk through & learn from. Definitely a place where you should visit

This is an amazing old cemetery. There are graves dating back to th 1800's next to modern internments. There are some interesting crypts left open to the elements. We ducked our heads inside and saw the stonework.

This cemetery is pretty sprawling. There's a lot of ground to cover and much to see, so give yourself plenty of time to explore this place. It can be difficult to find the way into the cemetery. Theres a main entrance you can drive in located off Vine St. Minus stars for being poorly maintained. Lots of downed tree limbs all over the road and entire cemetery.
